Open standard

Due to its openness, PROFINET provides the basis for a uniform automation network and thus allows the easy integration of existing systems.

The number of PROFINET nodes rose from 3.0 million at the end of 2010 to 4.3 million nodes at the end of 2011.

PROFINET, the open vendor-independent standard (IEC 61158/61784), is supported by PROFIBUS & PROFINET International (PI). It stands for maximum transparency, open IT communication, network security and simultaneous real-time communication.

Due to its openness, PROFINET creates the basis for a uniform automation network in the plant to which all of the machines and devices can be connected. The integration of existing parts of the plant, using PROFIBUS for example, can also be achieved without any problems through the use of gateways.

  • PROFINET is a defined standard (IEC 61158/61784).

  • PROFINET is 100% Ethernet in accordance with IEEE. Therefore, standard Ethernet network components can be used for PROFINET.

  • The implementation of PROFINET is open to any device manufacturer. Therefore the number of available field devices is continually growing.

  • PROFINET permits the unrestricted parallel use of an Ethernet connection for IO communication and standard IT data (TCP/IP) (siehe auch One cable for all purposes)

  • New PROFINET segments can be integrated without any problem into the existing plant or machine infrastructure, regardless of the manufacturers used.

  • For PROFIBUS users there is maximum investment protection, because existing PROFIBUS system parts can be seamlessly integrated into PROFINET.
